Small Dogs Breeds

Why do you want a small dog? Because you have always loved them and their spfrit? Because you are a town dweller living in a confined space? Because you think a bigger fellow might be more than you can handle? Because they cost less to feed?

Whatever your reason, if you purchase a small dog, you are unlikely to regret that decision. Little dogs are incredibly brave (often foolishly so), make good watchdogs (though they should not be allowed to yap) and are devoted to their owners. Even though they are often scornfully dismissed as lap dogs, tiny breeds will glady walk as far as you wish and ask for more.

There are many reasons for selecti ng a small breed. Transport is simpler, to begin with. Chihuahuas and Yorkshire Terriers rarely object to riding in a shopping basket. Small breeds are often more acceptable guests in hotels; and if not, boarding kennels often charge according to the dog's size. Small dogs are intelligentand easy to train, and there is less to groom, especially if you choose one of the short-coated varieties. Small dogs usually .Iive longer than their heavier relations. On the debit side, however, they are are not cheaper to buy and they do not have large litters.

If the man of the family says he won't be seen out with a toy dog, don't believe it - men often become willing slaves to the most delicate-looking animals. Perhaps this is a testimony to the sprite lurking inside most men and to theJarge spirit that inhabits most small dogs. Very small breeds are not a good choice if there are young children in the family, howeve_ as toddlers may think that they really are toys. A good choice for such a family is a dog of Cavalier or King Charles Spaniel size, or a sporty Miniature Schnauzer.

There is a wide range of small dogs from which to choose, in various colou rs and different types of coat. There are also scaleddown versions of larger breeds, such as the Miniature Poodle

If you can't bear to leave a dog alone in the house, you can always find room for two small dogs. This is how a lot of us dog folk began. . . but that's another story.
