Neapolitan Mastiff

The Neapolitan Mastiff is a large, imposing dog, usually depicted . wearing a spiked collar. It is an excellent guard but is reputed to a docile and friendly have temperament, being unlikely to attack except on command.

Origin and history

One scientific classification of the Neapolitan Mastiff puts it in theMolossoid group. It is a guard and defence dog, a police dog and atracker, of Italian origin, more specifically Neapolitan. Whether Italy's Mastiff ever did battle in the arenas of Rome is debatable, but geographical evidence gives credence to this theory.

Size

Height. dog 25112-28112in (65-72.5cm), bitch 23112-27in (60-68.5cm). Weight. 110-150lb (49.9-68kg).

Exercise

Like most dogs of its size, it is happiest when given a job to do and with a reasonable area in which to exercise. Obviously, it should not be considered by anyone who cannot meet these needs.

General appearance

The large Neapolitan Mastiff is strongly built, vigorous, of rustic but at the same time majestic appearance. It is robust and courageous, intelligent in expression, and having good mental balance, with a docile, unaggressive character. It is a matchless defender of its master and his property. The general conformation is that of a heavy mesomorph with a body longer than the height at the withers.

Colour.

Permissible are black, lead, mouse grey, streaked, sometimes with small white spots on the chest or on the tip of the toes.

Head

Massive with a broad, short skull. The total length of the head is about 35 per cent of the height at the withers; the length of the muzzle should be one-third of the total length of the head. The skin is abundant, forming wrinkles and folds.

Tail.

Thick at the root, robust and slightly tapered towards the tip. Inrepose the tail should be carried as a sabre tail: that is, hanging for the first two-thirds of its length and slightly curved in the lower third. It is never carried straight up or curled over the back, but horizontal or very slightly above the backline when the dog is in action. Its length is equal to or slightly more than the distance to the hock. It is docked to about two-thirds of its length.

Feet

Oval (hare feet) with close, arched toes; the pads are lean and hard and dark in colour. The nails are strong, curved and dark.

Recommended would be 2a-330z 587-936g) of a branded, meaty product with biscuit added, or 3-5 cupfuls of a dry food, complete diet, mixed in the proportion of 1 cup of feed to 112 cup of hot or cold water.
