Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen

The Basset Griffon Vendeen (Petit) is an ancient French hunting breed. As its name implies it is a shortlegged (basset), rough-coated (griffon) hound, originating in the district of Vendee, and is one of the four breeds of Basset Hounds found in France. The others are the Basset Artesien Normand, the Basset Bleu de Gascogne and the Basset Fauve de Bretagne.

The Basset Griffon Vendeen (Petit) is a cheerful, active, busy little hound, intelligent and inquisitive. Its friendly nature and liking for human companionship make it an excellent family pet, and its deep resonant voice can act as a deterrent.

Origin and history

The Griffon Vendeen (Petit), to quote Monsieur P Doubigne, an expert on the breed, is a miniature Basset reduced in size and proportions, while retaining all the qualities of the breed: the passion for hunting, fearlessness in the densest coverts, activity and vigour It was bred down from a larger variety, the Basset Griffon Vendeen (Grand), which was originally used for wolf hunting and is now used, in France, for hunting wild boar.
