Jack Russell Terrier

The Jack Russell Terrier has become immensely popular in recent years. For some time persons who fancied the Jack Russell were disappointed on finding that the breed they sought and acquired could not be registered with the Kennel Club in the United Kingdom for it was not as yet a pedigreed dog. The Kennel Club, aware of efforts to standardize the breed but unable to accept it ! while there was so much variation in colour, size and form, finally accorded championship status to the Jack Russell.

Origin and history

Reverend Jack Russell: a sporting parson in Devonshire, England, who died almost 100 years ago, built up a strain of wire-haired fox terriers that would hunt with his hounds, go to ground and bolt the fox. The dogs were, in fact, hunt terriers. Jack Russell not only bred his unique hunt terriers but also judged terriers at West Country shows and was one of the earliest members of the Kennel Club. After many years the breed has been established and proper records of pedigree are kept.
